PayPal offers debit cards and check cashing to the “unbanked.”

PayPal is aware that the eBay free bar is no longer taking orders, so it is looking into other services it could give to stay in people’s minds. For example, the company, which was one of Elon Musk’s first big successes, long before Tesla and SpaceX, is looking into expanding into standard banking with its debit cards and a way for its users to cash cheques like it’s 1990.

PayPal targets the “unbanked” with debit cards and cheque cashing

For a company that began as a method to avoid the hassle of online banking for small payments, this may seem like a strange new direction to take. However, PayPal COO Bill Ready says the company aims its unique services at the “unbanked” who spend a lot of money on interest and lender fees. He told TechCrunch, “We’re trying to get more of those people into the digital economy.” “We want to give something to people who don’t have bank accounts, credit cards, or debit cards so they don’t have to use prepaid cards, check cashers, or payday lenders.” paypal_targets_the_unbanked_with_debit_cards_and_cheque_cashing_-_1

How can a business that is not a bank offer banking services? PayPal will issue debit cards in collaboration with a Delaware bank, and a Georgia bank will cash cheques. No, you don’t have to go to Georgia. PayPal’s system works by letting users upload a picture of their cheques.

There will be some fees, such as ATM fees for debit withdrawals from machines not part of the PayPal MoneyPass network and a 1% fee for cashing cheques. Aside from this, there won’t be any minimum amounts or monthly payments.

It’s hard to see how PayPal could turn off people with bank accounts, but that’s not what it aims for. As Ready says, the people who are being targeted are unbanked, which isn’t just code for millennials, by the way. “Ready said, “The divide doesn’t always run along age lines.” “Traditional banking services are unavailable to the unbanked. We show them how to get into the digital economy.”
